The Margaret Thatcher Center for Freedom
was established in September 2005, following a substantial donation from
the Margaret Thatcher Foundation to the Heritage Foundation. It is the
only public policy center in the world dedicated to advancing the vision and ideals of
Lady Thatcher.
The Transatlantic Alliance
-
Advancing the Anglo-U.S. Special Relationship
-
Strengthening the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO)
-
Winning the War on Terror
-
Shaping U.S.-British Policy Toward Rogue States
-
The Alliance of English-Speaking Peoples
The U.S.-UK special relationship must remain pivotal to long-term
U.S. strategic thinking, and a cornerstone of NATO and the transatlantic
alliance. The Anglo-U.S. partnership is critical to victory in the
war on terror, and the disarming of rogue states such as Iran, Syria
and North Korea. The Thatcher Center will strengthen the ties that
bind the United States and Great Britain, and will work toward framing
a joint U.S.-British approach to fighting terror and confronting rogue
nations. It will seek to both preserve and advance the Special Relationship
as a chief foreign policy priority in Washington and London. The Thatcher
Center will also explore the concept of an ‘Anglosphere’ drawing together
the English-speaking nations of the world.
U.S. Policy Toward Europe
-
Advancing U.S. and British Interests in Europe
-
The EU Constitution and the Perils of European Integration
-
Maintaining British Sovereignty in Europe
-
U.S. Public Diplomacy in Europe
The Thatcher Center will play a major role in helping shape U.S.
policy toward Europe. It will also serve as an important resource for
educating and informing Congress and the Executive Branch of the United
States Government of the dangers posed to U.S. interests by the European
Constitution, the EU Common Foreign and Security Policy (CFSP), and
Franco-German efforts to create a federal European superstate. In addition,
the Thatcher Center will seek to address rising anti-Americanism in
Europe, through formulating a broad U.S. strategy in the area of public
diplomacy. The Center will build upon Heritage’s well-established reputation
as the leading center in Washington for the study of Anglo-American
and U.S.-European relations.
International Institutions
-
Ensuring the Supremacy of the Nation State over Supranational Institutions
-
Restricting the Power of the United Nations
-
Limiting the Power of the International Criminal Court
-
Advancing the Rule of Law
The Thatcher Center will study and assess the threat posed to U.S.
and British national interests by supranational institutions including
the United Nations, and the International Criminal Court (ICC). Drawing
on the Heritage Foundation’s extensive expertise in this area, the
Thatcher Center will play a lead role in shaping U.S. policy with regard
to reform of the UN, and opposition to the ICC. The Center will champion
the defense of the nation state in the face of efforts by America’s
strategic competitors and opponents to limit American global power,
and to restrict her ability to confront tyranny and advance freedom
and liberty on the world stage.
The Anglo-American Free Enterprise model
-
Strengthening the Trade Ties Between the U.S. and UK
-
Advancing Anglo-American Capitalism Across the World
The Thatcher Center will advance and promote the Anglo-American free
enterprise model. It will seek to help preserve and strengthen the
existing economic and trade relationship between the United States
and Great Britain, the most powerful financial partnership in the world.
The Center will warn of the dangers to U.S. interests posed by the
further political and economic integration in Europe.
